RollerCoaster Tycoon is a simulation strategy computer game that simulates theme park management.

Gameplay
The premise of the game is to complete a series of preset scenarios by successfully building and maintaining theme parks. The key to any park is building a large amount and diverse range of rides for the visitors. Players can choose from dozens of roller coaster types and can also build log flumes, carousels, bumper cars, haunted houses, go karts, Ferris wheels, and swinging ships, among other rides. The player can also build their own roller coaster design, laying out individual track pieces, choosing direction, height, and steepness, and adding such elements as zero g rolls, corkscrews, vertical loops, and even on-ride photos, using a tile-based construction system. The intensity and type of rides must be balanced, as visitors' preferences vary significantly from person to person; some prefer exciting rides and have high nausea tolerance levels, while others are just the opposite.

Roller coasters must be designed carefully so that they do not crash. On some types of roller coasters such as the dinghy water slide and bobsled roller coaster, cars can crash by flying off the track by going over a crest too fast. Rides must be properly maintained, or the chance of a crash caused by ride malfunction increases (very old attractions are also highly susceptible to such malfunctions).

Nobody could have predicted the phenomenal success of humble, little Roller Coaster Tycoon. Such simple, addictive games had been tried before; even the whole amusement park idea had been done in Theme Park, but RCT exploded with unmatched success. Legions of gamers enjoyed the colorful graphics, the simple but ever-so-opinionated patrons, the easy-to-master financial model, and the thrill of building, testing, and then watching customers enjoy your own roller coaster--or watching with glee as they got sick after their first ride! Roller Coaster Tycoon had the winning combination of fun and mainstream appeal that catapulted it to the top of the charts and spawned two expansion packs, as well as a horde of imitators. (Just conduct a search here at Amazon.com for games with the word "tycoon" in them.)

Ironically, Roller Coaster Tycoon 2 itself is an imitator of RCT. Perhaps in an effort not to spoil a good thing, or perhaps to guarantee success with low-system-spec mainstream fans, Roller Coaster Tycoon 2 plays almost exactly like the original game--maybe too much like it.

The graphics are still 2-D, and if you didn't know better you'd swear you were looking at the first game. This isn't good considering that the first game came out in 2000 and looked dated even then. But the ability to play the game at a much higher resolution does alleviate some of this disappointment, and a closer look reveals a greater variety of animation, more people, and a smoother overall look. The audio is, again, fantastic. It's that perfect mix of screams, giggles, grumbles, retches, and carnival music that brings the scent of cotton candy to your nose every time.

New structures are available as well as some new rides, but the biggest change is the addition of themes. Want a Haunted Park? They've given you the artwork to create one. You'll also find a Wild West theme, a children's theme, and more. The scenarios are grouped more logically by difficulty, and fans will be delighted with a sand box mode that allows limitless free play. RCT2 has a wide variety of new coaster designs, including a few famous coasters from around the world--mostly from Six Flags theme parks. A welcome addition is the ability to open a separate screen where you can test and build a custom coaster, without worrying about space or money, before buying and placing it in the game. Perhaps the best new addition is the ability to raise and lower ground en masse, removing one of the most annoying features of the first game.

Roller Coaster Tycoon 2 isn't a ground-breaking sequel, but it is an excellent game for fans of the series. We wish they'd done more with the concept, brought it into 3-D, or used higher-resolution artwork, but the gameplay remains the same. And that's a thrill ride on its own.

Fun:

When imagining an expansion pack for a theme park game like Rollercoaster Tycoon, my mind does not immediately go to zoo animals and the like; however, just as the water park additions of Soaked! added a new and fun dimension to the game, the zoo additions of Wild! create new challenges and add a greater sense of variety to RCT3. The scenarios added give an additional 10-20 hours of gameplay, and the new scenery and features augment an already fine-tuned game. It's just a great deal of fun and a great buy!

Theme Park Inc (also known as SimCoaster or Theme Park Manager) is the last game of the series that started with Theme Park in 1994 and continued with Theme Park World in 1999. After that, Electronic Arts has made no more games based on building amusement parks.

Theme Park Inc (as stated on their official website -- currently taken down but previously accessible through the Theme Park World portal) attempts to focus more on the management part of the park than on the actual rides. This, however, is contradicted in the SimCoaster Official Website (still online as of September 2007) which highlights the new Roller Coaster editor.

The main innovation Theme Park Inc introduced over Theme Park World was the simultaneous handling of several parks, each built to a different theme, shown on a globe reminiscent of Theme Park World. Since the themes were preset since the beginning, their diversity was limited in comparison to those available in Theme Park World; however each theme offered many new rides to be built, in addition to the Roller Coaster editor mentioned above.

In the game, the player starts as the assistant manager and has to subsequently climb their way up to the role as President. To do this, the player must complete certain objectives, challenges (from the other directors) and other challenging things.
